2007 wrap up

23 December 2007 - 07:40 PM

As the 2007 year draws to a close, we can reflect on the development achievements we have reached this year and what we have brought to the public.

The major release was the lauch of the Traffic Monitor web service in June. Although the project was slightly late - last minute debugging - we lauched our website hit counter service. This free tool has already featured on websites across the internet and the popularity of the service is still growing.

The OmegaSoft Developers Sandbox community website was also lauched in the summer for PHP, XML and SQL developers. This has seen countless articles written and has made OmegaSoft API code available to developers.

In addition, we released the API code for our Interface Model Engine. The IME has been used to seperate the business and presentation logic of the OmegaSoft website since 2005. This year we released the code to the public as it's own product. This API will allow web developers to seperate the presentation layers from their code on websites of varying complexity. Since it's lauch, several updates have been made to the code.

OmegaSoft PathSearch team also updated the search engine, based on research completed in the summer. This has made the engine more reliable and scalable for future projects.

Finally, our little surprise, the Whois lookup service, for querying DNS records for domain names.

Next year, we will continue to focus on these new services and products, as well as our new plans. What to expect in 2008 will be posted soon.

Merry Christmas.

FX - the new forum development project

02 December 2007 - 11:40 PM

We are to relaunch the open-source community forum software project.

The project was shelved earlier this year, as we looked at the new features of PHP 5, which we recently upgraded too.

Now we're pretty familiar with the PHP 5 object engine Zend, we're relaunching the project and optimising our previous efforts for PHP 5.

The project has been given the codename: FX.

Stay tuned for more.

Distance calculator

31 October 2007 - 09:36 AM

Just a little experiment in our spare time.

This application will calculate the distance between any two UK postcodes.

The post codes need to be in full (WV14 EED).

It connects to a database of postcodes which also hold the latitude and longitude of any given postcode. Using a function featured on the Sandbox, it will then work out the distance in miles between the two points.

Playing with GIS

16 September 2007 - 10:46 AM

GIS, Geographic Information Systems is a - still - young technology within computer science, which is currently booming thanks to the likes of Google Earth and MSN Virtual Earth.

Google have released API documentation for using their maps service on other websites/services.

Take a look at our Traveller application here. We're experimenting with their API's.

Traveller is a development-only application, where we're putting Google Maps to use by developing a 'sightseer' service.

OmegaSoft.co.uk outages 11 July 2007

11 July 2007 - 02:05 PM

We experienced several outages this morning (11 July 2007) on the OmegaSoft.co.uk website.

Unfortunately, this also affected our online services. In all, the site was down for 2 hours.

We appologise to any users who were affected by these outages.

We have corrected the problems and we are not experiencing any undue side effects as a result.
