Pros and cons of scripting languages

26 June 2006 - 06:42 AM

I was introduced to PHP and MySQL through my job and PHP is what I've grown to know and write on a daily basis. But recently I've been reaching out to see what else is around.

Pearl dies hard every time - to me it seems old and clunky. ASP is the PHP of the Windows world and still drives me up the wall. Flash interface is popular but ActionScript is as tedious as JavaScript and much forgiving. In the end you end up sending your flash commands to PHP to do the hard labour.

I might seem close-minded and old habits do die hard... but don't you resort to your favored language to get things done?

But wait... there's more: I was given a taster or Ruby - a powerful object-driven language, capable of so much more than web-apps. And then, some cleaver developer has produced "Rails". Ruby on Rails takes a bit of setting up and getting used to, but after reading a few manuals and tutorials I got it running on my local server. Yes it's different, but yes it's powerful! The basic structure of using scaffolds and modules, that come pre-build-in, to perform your every day tasks it a web-developers heaven.

I'm yet to get fluent enough to create anything groundbreaking - but I'm pleased to say that it's exciting way to expand my coding horizons.

As an `on and off` OmegaSoft developer, I'm happy to announce that I now have the chance to submit my views and ideas via the OmegaSoft developers blog!

My first project, the SecureTag IP management software appears, to my immense pride, to be a success.

Anyway, now, this is the end of my intro - so watch out for more exciting blogging!
